Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour Forms the base of the cake.

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup Buttermilk Adds moisture and tang.
  • 1 cup Vegetable oil Keeps the cake moist.
  • 4 large Eggs Acts as a binder.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract Enhances chocolate flavor.
  • 1 cup Boiling water Blooms the cocoa.

Frosting Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Unsalted butter Creates creamy texture.
  • 1/4 cup Unsweetened cocoa powder Adds chocolate flavor to frosting.
  • 1/2 cup Milk Achieves smooth consistency.
  • 3-4 cups Powdered sugar Sweetens and thickens frosting.
  • 1 cup Chopped pecans or walnuts (optional) Adds crunch to frosting.

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease a large sheet pan (18x13 inches) with cooking spray or butter, and lightly flour it.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, mix the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined.
  • Carefully stir in the boiling water.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared sheet pan, spreading it evenly.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  • While the cake is baking, melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in cocoa powder and milk until smooth.
  • Remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar until desired consistency.
  • Stir in chopped nuts into the frosting if using.
  • Once the cake is baked and cooled slightly, pour the frosting over the top.
  • Allow the cake to cool completely before cutting into squares.

Notes

Store leftover cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days.
